Domingos ‘Mingo’ Lopes is a revered founding elder and dedicated Board Member of the Tockwotton Fox Point Cape Verdean Heritage Place at India Point Park Project, Inc. (TFPCVHP), an independent, community-based research initiative led by former residents and descendants of the first settlement of Cape Verdeans in Rhode Island. The project was launched in 2007 and incorporated as a 501(c) (3) in 2013.

Domingos ‘Mingo’ Lopes is a revered founding elder and dedicated Board Member of the Tockwotton Fox Point Cape Verdean Heritage Place at India Point Park Project, Inc. (TFPCVHP), an independent, community-based research initiative led by former residents and descendants of the first settlement of Cape Verdeans in Rhode Island. The project was launched in 2007 and incorporated as a 501(c) (3) in 2013.
Mingo’s deep roots in “The Point”- stretching back to his days as a member and the star #3 Center on the South Main Street Boys’ Club basketball team, his decorated service as a Purple Heart Korean War Veteran, and his career with Local 1329 of the (I.L.A.) International Longshoremen’s Association – bring his living truth to the historical work of the TFPCVHP project, so dear to him.
Mingo, now joining other TFPCVHP elders/ancestors, has been the guiding vision for TFPCVHP legacy commemorative and preservation initiatives, most notably the St. Antonio Association, Local 1329 of the I.L.A. (International Longshoremen’s Association) and the 2024 renaming of South Main Street to ‘Tockwotton Fox Point Cape Verdean Way’.
Mingo’s absolute pride and joy is our commemorative place project at India Point, an initiative designed to honor the sacred historical ground of Rhode Island’s first Cape Verdean settlement. Following the TFPCVHP project’s milestone municipal approvals in 2024 from the City of Providence, the Board of Park Commissioners, and Arts, Culture & Tourism, Mingo was filled with immense pride knowing that this heritage would be set in stone. As we move forward with the physical installation at India Point Park, we carry his vision with us.
